Renew registration

Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) providers are required to renew their registration at specified times.

When to renew your registration

CRICOS registration does not renew automatically. You will need to start planning and preparing your application 12 months before the expiry date—you can check this date on training.gov.au.

Your renewal application must be submitted at least 90 days before your registration expiry date.

If we do not receive a completed renewal application or you have not paid all relevant fees, your registration may not be renewed.

On average, registration renewal takes between seven and eight months to pass through all stages of the assessment process.

What happens if my registration expires while ASQA is assessing my application?

If your registration expires while ASQA is assessing your application, your registration will remain active on CRICOS.

During this period you will be able to continue creating Confirmations of Enrolment in the Provider Registration and International Students Management System (PRISMS).

How to prepare your renewal application

ASQA conducts a rigorous check of every CRICOS renewal application. Before submitting your application, you must be confident that your organisation can demonstrate it:

  • can comply with the ESOS Framework
  • is meeting all its obligations to learners and clients
  • has effective governance and administration arrangements in place
  • is delivering quality training and assessment outcomes that meet the needs of industry and learners.

ASQA rejects a large number of applications as incomplete due to lack of mandatory information or supporting evidence. Our self-assessment for initial CRICOS registration (DOCX) can be useful for assessing compliance before applying for registration renewal.

How to submit your renewal application

Submit your 'Application to renew CRICOS registration' using the online registration portal, asqanet.

You will have to provide a Fit and Proper Persons declaration (DOCX) when you submit your application.

How we process your renewal application

ASQA will review your application for CRICOS registration renewal to make sure you can comply with the ESOS Framework. We will also look at:

  • your history as a training provider
  • your business status with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission
  • other sources of ASQA risk intelligence.

As part of this process, we may ask you to provide an updated version of the Financial viability risk assessment tool.

If you are delivering English-language courses, we will also review your capacity to meet the ELICOS Standards 2018.

Outcome of your renewal application

If we approve your application

If we approve your renewal application, we will notify you whether we:

  • approve your application in full
  • approve some parts of your application, but not others
  • approve your application with specific conditions.

ASQA can choose to renew your CRICOS registration for any period up to seven years.

We will tell you our decision, and the reasons for the decision, in writing.

If we reject your application

We will tell you our decision, and the reasons for the decision, in writing.

If you disagree with our decision

There are a number of options available to you if you are not satisfied with an ASQA decision.

CRICOS renewal fees

Fees and charges relief

ASQA is waiving some fees and charges for:

  • VET providers and accredited course owners until 1 July 2022
  • ELICOS-only providers until 31 December 2022

The introduction of ASQA’s full cost recovery will be deferred a further 6 months to 1 July 2022.

Renewal of CRICOS registration involves two fees.

  1. CRICOS renewal of registration application lodgement fee—$500 per application.
  2. CRICOS renewal of registration assessment fee—$7000 base fee per application.
  • The base fee covers up to four qualifications and up to two delivery sites
  • For each additional qualification, add $155
  • For each additional Australian delivery site, add $820.

The total amount you can be charged (including both fees) is capped at $50,000 per application.

For a full list of ASQA fees and charges, please read the Guide to ASQA fees and charges (PDF).

The Department of Education, Skills and Employment charges CRICOS fees separately of ASQA—see the Department website for more details.

ASQA fees and charges are in addition to the Department's fees and charges.
