When training products change

Why training products change

It is important students graduate with a qualification that meets the current skill needs of an industry.

Relevant Industry Reference Committees update training packages from time to time to align with current industry skill requirements.

Changes to a training package can impact:

  • qualifications
  • units of competency
  • assessment requirements

How training products change

When a training package is revised, training products may replace products from a previous version. If this happens, products are classified as equivalent or not equivalent.

Training products may also be classified as deleted, where they are not replaced by a newer version.

Register for training package updates

Register to receive training package updates by signing in at training.gov.au

  1. Sign in or register for an account
  2. Go to the relevant training package listing and select the ‘Notify me of changes’ link at the top right of the page.
  3. Choose the option to receive notifications about ‘All changes’ to this training package and click ‘Save’.

Equivalent and not equivalent products

Equivalent products have the same vocational outcome.

Not equivalent products produce a different vocational outcome.

Deleted products

In some instances, industry identifies there is not sufficient demand for a qualification to justify it being maintained.

The qualification is deleted without being superseded by another.

What to do when training products change

Review Clauses 1.26 to 1.27—Manage transition from superseded training products to understand your responsibilities when training products change.

When a training product on your scope of registration is replaced by a newer version, you need to:

  • ensure the new version is added to your scope of registration
  • transition learners to the new version within 12 months.

When a training package product on your scope of registration is deleted, you need to ensure students complete their study:

  • 1 year after the product is deleted for units and skill sets, or
  • 2 years after the product is deleted for qualifications.

Units within a current qualification can change. This generates a new release of the qualification. The qualification code remains the same.

Review your training and assessment strategy and consider if the changes affect your delivery plan.

Prepare and transition to the new unit within the transition period.

Equivalent training products

We automatically update equivalent training products to your scope. We will update you on these changes by email.

If you do not want the new equivalent product on your scope of registration, you can apply to remove it. You can reinstate removed products within 12 months without a fee.

Not equivalent training products

You need to apply to add new, not equivalent training package qualifications and units of competency to your scope of registration.

Accredited courses

You need to apply to add a new accredited course to scope, even if it replaces another accredited course on your registration.

Monitor the registration period for Accredited Courses and be ready to complete all students within that period.

When training packages change, you have time to prepare and transition.

How to check updates to the national register

The national register, training.gov.au is updated when a training package changes.

You can view your qualifications history and mapping information.

Qualifications history shows the start and end dates for your training products.

Steps to check your qualifications history:

  1. Go to training.gov.au
  2. Use your organisation’s name or code to search Organisations or RTOs. This will open your ‘Organisation details’.
  3. Find the ‘Display history’ check box on the top right side of the page. Tick the check box.
  4. Click and open the Scope tab. Scope is your list of approved training products. Scroll down to ‘Qualifications history’. Here you can view the start and end dates for your training products.

Training product status can be:

  • Current
  • Superseded
  • Deleted

Training package details include mapping information. This information shows the history of product changes, comments, and equivalence status.

The table below shows an example of qualification mapping information.
