What happens during a performance assessment?
ASQA customises each audit undertaken to the particular RTO or provider. An RTO or provider’s compliance history and ASQA’s detailed risk intelligence gathering will inform the depth and scope of a performance assessment (audit).
This customised approach means that providers who demonstrate a higher risk profile, poor compliance history or poor student outcomes will be subject to deeper-level performance assessments.
In most cases, a performance assessment will require a visit to the physical training site. The length of a site visit will vary based on the size of the provider and the scope of the performance assessment.
Our assessors will seek to verify the evidence of compliance supplied by providers. They may do this by:
- looking at the experience of students (e.g. assessments, student files rather than only ‘assessment master tools’)
- evaluating the adequacy of facilities and equipment
- researching and seeking other intelligence, including looking at websites and social media
- interviewing students to confirm providers claims
- interviewing trainers and assessors
- contacting relevant third parties.
Is there a charge for compliance audits?
ASQA is waiving some fees and charges for VET providers and accredited course owners from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021.
ASQA's compliance audit charge is $275 per auditor, per hour.
The charge applies to time spent by ASQA on:
- planning the performance assessment (audit)
- conducting the performance assessment
- preparing the performance assessment report
- other related business processes.
If any part of the performance assessment is conducted outside Australia, reimbursement of all reasonable costs incurred by ASQA, including the cost of travel, will be required.
