Renewing an accredited course

This fact sheet provides summary information on deciding if an accredited course should be renewed and the process of preparing and submitting a renewal of accreditation application.

Should the course be renewed?

For a course to be renewed, you must research and provide evidence that there is an ongoing industry, enterprise, education, legislative or community need for the course.

A course can only be considered for renewal if it does not duplicate the outcomes of existing training package products. Training Packages are regularly updated to meet identified needs. Therefore, a training package unit of competency, skill set or qualification which covers the same outcomes may have been endorsed since the course was last accredited.

When should I submit an application to renew accreditation

The National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011 requires that you submit your application to renew accreditation 90 days before the course’s expiry date.

To meet this submission deadline, you must begin preparation for renewing the course well in advance of this 90-day cut-off date.

ASQA will process your application as an initial accreditation application if it receives your application after the 90-day cut-off date.

Timeframes for renewal of accreditation

Provided that the course document and course accreditation submission are developed in accordance with the relevant requirements, a course could be renewed within four to six months. Timeframes vary depending on a range of factors, including the quality of the submission.

If you submit a complete application to ASQA 90 days prior to the course’s expiry date, the accreditation of the current course is taken to continue until the renewal application is decided.

A formal request to extend the accreditation of the course is not required.
